Modern Slavery Statement
Modern Slavery Statement
Introduction
This statement is made pursuant to Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and sets out the steps that Alterra Farms has taken and continues to take to ensure that modern slavery or human trafficking is not taking place within our business or supply chain.
Modern slavery encompasses slavery, servitude, human trafficking and forced labour. Alterra Farms and its associated businesses have a zero tolerance approach to any form of modern slavery and is committed to acting ethically and with integrity and transparency in all business dealings and to putting effective systems and controls in place to safeguard against any form of modern slavery taking place within the business or our supply chain.
Our Business and Supply Chain
Alterra Farms is a rural portfolio of farming and hospitality businesses based in Suffolk, England, UK. We employ approximately 50 people that work across two locations in the villages of Letheringham and Easton.
Our supply chain includes:
- Direct suppliers of goods and services
- Contractors and subcontractors
- Professional service providers
- Technology and software providers
We recognise that certain sectors and geographical areas may present higher risks of modern slavery, and we are committed to understanding and addressing these risks.
Our Policies
We operate the following policies that describe our approach to the identification of modern slavery risks and the steps to be taken to prevent slavery and human trafficking in our operations:
Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Policy – This policy reflects our commitment to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to ensure slavery and human trafficking is not taking place anywhere in our supply chains.
Employee Code of Conduct – Our code makes clear to employees the actions and behaviour expected of them when representing the organisation. We strive to maintain the highest standards of employee conduct and ethical behaviour.
Recruitment Policy – We operate a robust recruitment policy, including conducting eligibility to work in the UK checks for all employees to safeguard against human trafficking or individuals being forced to work against their will.
Whistleblowing Policy – We encourage all employees, customers and other business partners to report any concerns related to our direct activities or our supply chains. This includes any circumstances that may give rise to an enhanced risk of slavery or human trafficking.
Due Diligence Processes
As part of our initiative to identify and mitigate risk, we:
- Conduct risk assessments of our supply chain to identify areas of potential risk
- Require suppliers to confirm their compliance with our anti-slavery policy and applicable laws
- Include contractual provisions requiring suppliers to comply with modern slavery legislation
- Maintain preferred supplier lists of pre-approved suppliers who have demonstrated compliance with our standards
- Conduct periodic reviews of key suppliers and their practices
- Monitor supplier performance and conduct audits where appropriate
Risk Assessment and Management
We have assessed the risk of modern slavery occurring in our business and supply chains. Key risk factors we consider include:
- Geographical risks in countries or regions with weak governance, conflict, or higher prevalence of modern slavery
- Sectoral risks in industries known to use temporary, seasonal or unskilled labour
- Product and service risks related to raw materials, manufacturing processes or service delivery
- Business relationship risks with new suppliers or those in high-risk categories
Based on our risk assessment, we focus our due diligence efforts on suppliers in higher-risk categories and regularly review and update our risk assessments.
Training and Awareness
To ensure a high level of understanding of the risks of modern slavery in our business and supply chains, we provide training to relevant members of our team. This training covers:

- How to escalate potential modern slavery issues to the relevant parties

Our Performance Indicators
We use the following key performance indicators to measure how effective we have been in ensuring that slavery and human trafficking is not taking place in any part of our business or supply chains:
- Completion of modern slavery risk assessments for new and existing suppliers
- Percentage of suppliers that have confirmed compliance with our anti-slavery policy
- Number of modern slavery training sessions delivered to staff
- Number of reports received through our whistleblowing procedures related to modern slavery concerns
